Floor Grading Explained - Handy Flooring info

Wood flooring is categorised into 5 grades. Each grade offers its own unique appearance, so read on to find out which suits your vision.

Prime

Prime graded wood  is the most uniform of our wood grades. Its appearance is smooth with consistent colouring and only small, minimal knots in its surface. The clean aesthetic of prime wood will suit a modern home with a sleek, minimal look.

Classic 

Classic graded wood is almost as uniform as prime but features a few more small knots in its surface. This gives the planks a tiny bit of character, without the imperfect look that our more rustic floors have.

Select

Select graded wood features smaller knots and a more uniform coloured appearance than our rustic planks , but features more character than prime and classic. Select planks are ideal if you like the clean look of prime and classic but want a little more character.

Rustic 

Rustic graded wood is characterised by its naturally occurring grains, knots, and colour variation. These imperfections create a beautiful, textured look that will complement rustic or farmhouse decor. Any open knots are filled but this only adds to the perfectly imperfect aesthetic. 

Distressed

Distressed graded wood is intentionally designed to look worn. Stains, colour washing and embossing roll are used to age the wood, while pits and nail holes are made for extra character. Distressed planks particularly suit rustic aesthetics, but they’re also ideal for well used areas of the home, as marks or scratches only add to their character.
